Organisational Development and Training Project of Malawi National Association of the Deaf

WHAT: The project supports organizational capacity of Malawi National Association of the Deaf (MANAD).

WHY: The opportunities for deaf in Malawi to participate are not equal to those of the hearing population. The status of Sign language as the first language of the deaf is not recognized, although Malawi has ratified the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. Deaf are poorer and more uneducated than the hearing population. There are still strong prejudices in relation to deafness.

HOW: By supporting MANAD’s organizational capacity the membership of the association is activated and influencing decision making they can demand for the materialization of the human rights. Attitudes are changed through information sharing and sensitization of the society. The project benefits mainly the deaf, their families, and the national association, which has an opportunity to improve its organizational capacity.

PARTNER ORGANISATION: The project implemented by Malawi National Association of the Deaf MANAD.
